multi boot - How to make Windows 10 bootloader As default bootloader

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 and then installed Windows 10, so I normally boot GRUB 2 to access both, but one day my keyboard stopped working with GRUB 2. So I changed GRUB 2 with Windows 7 bootloader using easyBCD, but the problem remains.

But one day Windows 10 bootloader appeared, I don't know how it appeared, but only for one time, and in it both mouse and keyboard worked fine.

What I need:

1--To change Windows 7 bootloader to GRUB 2 or change Windows 7 bootloader to Windows 10 bootloader if that's easier.

2--After changing to GRUB 2 I need to change to Windows 10 bootloader which has the option to boot in Windows 10 and to GRUB 2/Ubuntu.

I am not an expert in Ubuntu so please give a clear, detailed solution.

Please help I can't access Ubuntu most of the time because the keyboard is not working.

I also turned on legacy support in BIOS, but that didn't help.

script - How to replace a single character in Windows filenames using a batch file?

I have a Windows Server 2003 server that has a whole bunch of filenames that need renaming. Basically, I just need all - (hyphens) replaced with _ (underscores), no matter where they are in the filename. Assume that there are no duplicates.

I can do this on my Mac with a little script but the files are too large and crazy to transfer to my Mac, rename, then go back to the server. Is it possible to do this in a Windows command prompt without having to download a renamer or any additional software?

Answer

From the command prompt - assuming that all of your files are in the same directory:

ONE-LINER

for /f "tokens=* delims= " %i in ('dir /b "*.txt"') do Set LIST=%i& set LIST | ren "%~fi" "%LIST:-=_%"

Keep in mind that this is a one shot per command prompt window. That means if you cancel this for any reason, then you'll need to open another command prompt and run again.

No Boot Device Available

I have a Dell Vostro 230 Windows 7 computer and recently the hard drive was starting to fail. I then purchased a new hard drive in order to replace the redundant hard drive.

I installed the new hard drive (along side the failing one) and installed Windows 7 on the new hard drive. So now I have two hard drives (new and failing one) each with Windows 7 on it. When both of them are plugged in i can boot to either one. When i boot to my new one it works just fine.

Now here's the issue. When i remove the failing hard drive and just leave the new one in there, upon booting it says 'No Boot Device Available'.

I then checked the BIOS settings and it all seems to be correct. The boot order is correct. The BIOS seems to recognize the new disk as it has the new disk already selected.

Please direct me on what i should do next. Bear in mind this is a brand new hard drive.

Answer

Could you take a snapshot even if via a smartphone of your bios boot options and the front page? I may be able to diagnose it. Else try to reseast the hdd. Put the new one in the old slot and see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't leave the new one in the old slot, and put the old one in the new one, restart your machine and see if it can boot. If it does, try cloning you old hard drive using a software like the one from this website EaseUS Disk Copy. After cloning, remove the old hdd, leaving only the new one in and see if it will boot. There is a chance the MBR in your new HDD may not be configured or installed properly. With that software it can clone an entire OS from primary HDD to secondary HDD with exact partitions and MBR files too.

windows - Win XP very slow booting up - multiple volume files?

Windows XP Home Premium with SP3
500MB RAM
2.9 GHz Processor
50GB free space on HD

My sister's PC takes ages to boot up so she asked me to look at it...

Upon inspection within task manager it appears that about 40 instances of the volume control seem to be open in the task manager applications tab? These subsequently correspond to about 40 sndvol32.exe processes in the processes tab.

So this would seem to be why her computer takes ages to start but why these volume files are appearing so much i do not know?

Any ideas/thoughts appreciated?

Answer

get Autoruns and clean up the startup routine then.

also have a look at Blackviper's service tweak guide.

windows 8.1 - Fujitsu NH532 USB 3.0 devices working at 2.0 speeds

I have a Fujitsu NH532 with 3 USB 3.0 ports running Windows 8.1.

My problem is that none of the blue USB 3.0 ports is operating at 3.0 speed. Whichever USB 3.0 device I plug in, the Devices and Printers page in the Control Panel puts a remark that the "device would work faster if plugged into a 3.0 port".

All the latest Fujitsu drivers from their page are installed (it's using Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller driver by Microsoft), latest BIOS version too, and looking at the Device Manager, I can see the USB Root Hub (xHCI) shown at the bottom, but with a couple of "Generic USB" hubs which seem to operate at 2.0. This is how the page looks like with a USB 3.0 flash drive plugged in (there are two Mass Storage devices, presumably the other one is just the built-in card reader).

USB controllers

When I plug in a device, I can find it in the properties for one the Generic USB Hubs at the top:

enter image description here

Note the "Hub is operating at high-speed" message.

enter image description here

On the other hand, properties for the xHCI hub don't show any tabs regarding connected devices:

enter image description here

Did anyone have a similar problem and found a way to resolve it?

(Update) - Added a snapshot of the devices sorted by connection, as suggested by @BenVoigt:

Devices by connection

This indeed shows that the USB 3.0 mass storage device is not connected under the eXtensible Host Controller.

Answer

Some remarks :

  1. The NH532 drivers page also has a USB Host Controller driver,
while you are using the driver by Microsoft,
so you haven't installed all the NH532 drivers.

  2. Your USB device is on the Enhanced Host Controller, which means
USB 2. As the NH532 has both USB 2 and USB 3 ports, ensure that you are
    using the right ports.

Your device should be on the Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller.

  3. Find in the BIOS (maybe under Advanced / USB Configuration)
an entry that may be named something like "Intel xHCI Mode" and
ensure it is enabled. Not all BIOS have such an option, but most do.

  4. Go to Intel's Drivers & Software page
and use "Automatically update your drivers" to get, install and use the
    Intel Driver Update Utility.
This will get at least, if missing,
the Intel(R) USB 3.0 Host Controller Switch Driver.

As according to the poster all the above conditions are correct on his computer,
and as the USB 3 device shows up as connected to the
Enhanced Host Controller - which serves USB 2,
rather than to the Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - which serves USB 3,
I am led to the astonishing conclusion of a manufacturing error.

I have no other explanation than that during assembly of this computer,

the USB 3 ports were connected by mistake to the USB2 Host Controller,
so work at USB 2 speed, or that there is some other problem with the installed ports
or controller.
If that is the case, there is no software solution to the problem.

windows 7 - How to restore a Dell Inspiron 2100 back to factory settings?

My computer won't boot into Windows 7 anymore.

It started off with Vista, was upgraded to 7 (both by legal means)

I wanted to install ubuntu or kubuntu, so I got wubi and boot-loaded it via usb flash drive.

After that, windows 7 wouldn't start. It would get as far as the green-metered progress bar on the bottom for about 10 seconds, but then would go right back to the bios screen after that.

I have Hiren's BootCD 10.1, windows xp cd, and (obviously) an external usb cd drive.

Anyone know what tool(s) to use to restore this computer so that I can boot windows xp cd and setup/install it?

windows 7 - "Temporarily" disable group policy?

I'm trying to get some software installed on my company laptop (Business Intelligence SSDT for Visual Studio). As a developer, I have administrator rights, and have never run into an issue installing software before. The software has been approved by my company.

SSDI needs to install Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools, which fails during setup due to "Rule 'Setup account privileges' failed." I've traced this issue back to a group policy setting for "Debug programs":

  • Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings >
Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment

In the list of policies, the "Debug programs" security settings does not have "Administrators" listed. And although I am part of the administrators group, I am unable to add groups to this policy.

Is there some way I can "temporarily" disable or remove these group settings, install the software I need, then re-enable everything afterwards? Or better yet - add the administrator group to the policy?

I've seen several options, but I don't want to proceed with half-baked ideas that could affect my laptop's access to the company network.

For example, could I:

  1. Right-click into my Local Computer Policy > Properties, and select the option to "Disable Computer Configuration settings"?

  2. Edit the registry to remove group policy settings?

  3. Create a non-domain user (a true "local admin" user?) that has no GPO restrictions, disconnect from any network, and install the software from there?

Are there risks to the above options that I would not be able to reverse myself? Or are there other better options?

Side note: My first step troubleshooting this was to contact my system admin, who informed me that I should have "full control" over all my local policies, including the "Debug programs". According to him, there should be no permission / group policy restrictions for administrators.

His thought is that the issue is coming from some sort of permission (or as he put it, "sysadmin" access) to our SQL servers, and he would have to reach out to the server team and get back to me in a few days. I have permission to "explore" my own solutions in the mean time.

Answer

As opposed to working around group policy, you might be able to add yourself or the Administrators group directly to the "Debug Privilege" right.

There's a command-line utility called NTRIGHTS which can do this:

Ntrights.exe -u Administrators +r SeDebugPrivilege

NTRights is part of the W2K3 resource kit, but it still works on more recent windows versions. See Windows 7 equivalent for ntrights.exe and http://ss64.com/nt/ntrights.html (I don't have a direct link on where to download it, but with some google sleuthing, or getting your hands on the W2K3 resource kit install, you'd have it).

ssd - Dell PERC H710P Raid Control reduced I/O speeds when idle

I have a Dell PERC H710P Raid Controller card and 4 Dell Certified 600GB Solid State Drives configured in RAID-10. I have a Dell Poweredge R820. After performing benchmark tests using ATTO, I usually average 3.5Gb/s speeds for read and write.

The machine is still fairly new, and does not have anything running on it yet. I noticed however, when I leave the server on and unattended (no programs running, machine is idle), the next day I go and perform the benchmark test again using ATTO, the read and write speeds decrease to 1 Gb/s.

Read Policy = Adaptive Read Ahead,
Write Policy = Write Back,
Stripe Element Size = 64KB,
Disk Cache Policy = Enabled,

The only solution I have found to restore the read and write speeds back 3.5 Gb/s is to restart the server.... everyday...

Any thoughts on why the read and write speeds decrease when the machine sits idle for over a day or so?

Answer

Check the power system profile in the BIOS and try setting it to 'Performance'. We've found a variety issues when the system is in power efficient mode. In addition to reduced storage i/o we've seen high latency on 10GbE networking and poor VM performance when the system is a hypervisor. But like your situation, the problems only manifest after the system has been running for a while.

windows 7 - How to load entire program from pagefile quickly?

Sometimes I do not use some programs with high memory usage (e.g. virtual machine with 2 GB of memory) for several days. When I return to it, its memory is mostly swapped onto HDD. When I try to work with this program later it is loaded back very slowly. For example its physical memory usage raises from 600 MB to 1100 MB with the speed of 250 KB/s and only after that it becomes rather responsive. So the slowdown is because data are read non-sequentially.

Is it possible to load program's memory in one sequential HDD read pass? Because this has to take only half a minute.

This is a working machine, OS Windows 7 x64, RAM size is 8 GB.

video - Using WGET to Get All of the .mov Files from Diggnation

I'm trying to download every single episode of Diggnation using WGET to grab the small QuickTime movies. It would be too tiring to go through every single page to download them. Here's what I'm thinking:

 wget -r -l 1 -A mov http://revision3.com/diggnation/

Unfortunately this doesn't work. Anyone have a better idea on how to get all the eps? Here's an example URL:

Hard Drive Reallocated Sector / Event Count and Current Pending Sector

So I pulled this hard drive out of a unit that was un-formated on of no where and re-formated it just fine in windows. Decided to run some test on it and got these errors.

enter image description here

Errors

Reallocated Sector Count

Reallocated Event Count

Current Pending Sector

Ran a Disk Check: with no errors...

enter image description here

Can these errors be fixed? I've formated the drive 3 times now, and each time it was successful. I can copy stuff to the drive just fine.

Answer

A HDD only detects faulty sectors when it tries to read from it but fails. Then it adds the sector to the pending sector count. Which will reallocate it to somewhere else as soon as you try to write to this sector the next time. (reallocated sector count)

Why did the read fail? Either the writing failed (and was not noticed since HDDs just write and assume it was successful) or the reading simply does not work for whatever reasons. The thing is, to be sure that your HDD is okay you need to write to every sector and then read every sector.

If after reading every sector the pending sector count has increased, you know that something is still broken.

I would suggest a tool like http://hddscan.com/
Use it to write and read every sector (preferably several times) to ensure your drive is okay (i.e., the yellow values do not change). Also the pending sector count should be zero.

Nevertheless you should probably backup and replace the drive. ,

After their first reallocation, drives are over 14 times more likely to fail within 60 days than drives without reallocation counts, making the critical threshold for this parameter also one.

Converting an External Hard drive to NTFS

I am trying to convert my external hard drive from fat32 to ntfs. If possible, I want to avoid losing the data or having transfer it off and back on and formatting ( I have about 400gb of data).

I am using windows 7.

[The hard drive is a samsung story 1.5tb drive] It arrived in FAT32 but I did not check this and began using it. For the past year I have been using it without any problems. Only recently had I started to deal with large files and suddenly I noticed that it is not ntfs and that fat32 has a 4gb limit.

I have tried:

1) opening cmd as administrator and doing a conversion there e.g: convert E:/ fs/ntfs
This failed. It said messages about the drive being in use and asked me if i wanted to kill these connection i entered Y and it would not convert.

2) I ran chkdsk everything was fine. Tried again as above.. failed to convert to ntfs.

3) I searched for third software to do this - i have in the past used 'partition magic' to do this but i noticed that this program is very old so i found 'EASEUS partition master' it was not able to convert it.

4) I restarted in safemode command prompt and ran the convert E:/ fs/ntfs command from there everything seemed to go right up to the last minute and then it failed to convert.

Are there any other methods other then the obious "move the data off the drive format and place it back on" route.

Answer

Thanks for the responses guys! But I fixed the issue myself in the end...

What I did was use this command:

convert E:/ fs:ntfs /NoSecurity /X

This action disabled the UAC by disabling security and allowing all user access. /X dismounted the drive before conversion. It attempted the conversion. Chkdsk found errors on the drive.

I then ran this command:

chkdsk E:/ /F

(/F fixes any errors on the drive automatically)

It worked and fixed two corrupt file errors in insignificant files.

I then finally did the original command again:

convert E:/ fs:ntfs /NoSecurity /X

Conversion was successful this time and took about 20 minutes in total.

I can't begin to imagine how long it would have taken to copy 400GB from the drive via USB, format the drive and then put the data back - I guess DAYS!

Thanks again for your responses; I hope someone finds this useful in the future when trying to convert an external hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS without losing data.

windows 8.1 - Can't enter password because Sticky Keys is enabled

I have a Windows 8.1 PC and accidentally spilled water over my keyboard. I took some keys out, tried to let it dry and get the water out. While doing this a lot of keys get mashed.

I restarted my PC and now I cannot login because I think I got the "Sticky Keys" functionality enabled and cannot type any characters now. I thought that it was the keyboard but using the on screen keyboard for the login yields that I still cannot type any normal characters.

Does anyone know how to bypass this and disable Sticky Keys in the Login Screen?

installation - Install ONLY Media Center On 8.1 Laptop With 8.1 Pro ISO?

I have a Dell laptop that came with Windows 8.1. (I guess it's not an "update" since it came with 8.1 out of the box.)

I just purchase a legitimate version of Windows 8.1 Pro (student) edition from the Microsoft store. I downloaded the installer and created both an ISO file and media drive on a USB stick.

My question is, can I somehow install only Media Center onto my 8.1 laptop without installing the entire 8.1 Pro operating system?

I don't even know if the Pro comes with Media Center or if I have to buy it (I think I read somewhere that it's like $10 if you have 8.1 Pro).

So this might complicate my situation a little bit.. I might have to find a way to buy Media Center for $10 without having to install 8.1 Pro first. It's my understanding that the "standard" way to buy Media Center when you already have 8.1 Pro installed is to go "Add Features" and then select "Buy product key online" and I will then be given the option to buy Media Center.

Since I don't have 8.1 Pro installed I won't have the option to get Media Center using the "Add Features" method. Is there another way to get Media Center without going through the OS? (Like a page where I can buy it for $10 by just providing my 8.1 Pro license key?)

Thanks!

Jan

Answer

You should be able to just do an in-place upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro...

From MS: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Upgrade Paths

You can upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro and keep Windows settings, personal
files, and applications from the following Windows operating system
editions:

  • Windows 8

  • Windows 8 Pro

  • Windows 8 Pro with Media Center

  • Windows 8.1

Then acquire and install the Media Center pack:

From MS's Add Windows 8.1 Pro Pack or Windows 8.1 Media Center Pack to your edition of Windows 8.1 :

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.)

  2. Enter add features in the search box, and then tap or click Settings.

  3. Tap or click Add features to Windows 8.1 and then do one of the following:

    • If you need to purchase a product key, tap or click I want to buy a product key online.

Follow the steps to purchase and enter a product key.

    • If you already have a product key, tap or click I already have a product key.

  4. Enter your product key and click Next.

  5. Read the license terms, select the check box to accept the license terms, and then click Add features.

Windows Boot Manager, linking a 'device' to boot linux

I'm attempting to boot linux on a UEFI-GPT machine with a Windows Boot Manager (WBM).

So far I have installed Archlinux (Arch) with Grub. The grubx64.efi is successfully on my windows boot partition and I can see the option to use it in UEFI-BIOS, selecting this loads grub and I'm able to get into Arch fine.

I have noticed that in the Windows Boot Manager, selecting from the splash screen, 'Change defaults or choose other options' > 'Choose other options' > 'Use a device', shows the boot options as in UEFI-BIOS, in my case grub shows as 'Linux'. Selecting 'Linux' reboots the computer and loads grub then Arch.

enter image description here

Is there anyway to use this entry for the device 'Linux' to show directly on the WBM splash screen under the entry for Windows 8.1? Ideally i'd like the 'Arch Linux' to link to the 'Linux' device.

enter image description here

Guidance with bcdedit appreciated, thanks in advance.

Answer

"Use a device" in the image above lists boot entries from NVRAM (CSM is enabled as BIOS devices are shown as well as Linux boot entry).

There is no known way to start successfully a non-Windows EFI loader entry in BCD from Windows boot manager.

EFI boot manager (in firmware) can start any EFI application from ESP, Windows boot manager- bootmgr.efi starts only memtest.efi and winload.efi successfully AFAIK.

For booting directly any device or installed OS(Windows, Linux) on UEFI(and BIOS) from Windows 8.1/7 you can use BootNext tool.

ubuntu - Attribute “partition” not found - error with mkfs.vfat

I have a USB flash drive that's become unrecognisable in Windows 7, as detailed in my question on SuperUser here. I was advised to try using Ubuntu, and was able to see the flash drive using it, although using Disks to zero-wipe, format it and create a new partition still didn't make it visible in Windows 7.

After using dd to zero-write the drive, and then using Disks to create a "FAT" partition, I started following this answer here, and did the command:

sudo mkfs.vfat -I /dev/sdc

I got the error:

Attribute "partition" not found

...and the command stopped running.

I tried again, this time formatting the drive in Disks and then using Gparted to create a "fat32" partition table, followed by a partition that I formatted as fat32, but still got the same error.

It seems to me that the error has something to do with the -I switch, but I'd rather not omit it because I feel like it may be a necessary step to getting my USB successfully recognised again. I've checked in Disks, and it does report the drive as having a (single, FAT) partition.

What exactly does the Attribute "partition" not found error mean, and how can I get rid of it?

Windows 7 OEM product key isn't working

I have a problem with my Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile v6535 laptop. I got it from dump and the HDD was bad, so i replaced it. At the begining, i was using a non-genuine copy of windows (because the COA sticker was damaged and unreadable) , but i erased that copy so i can have a genuine Windows machine.

So what's the problem ?

Well, i managed to recover a genuine Windows 7 Ultimate x86 key from the old corrupted hard drive and i wanted to use it on a Windows 7 installation downloaded from DigitalRiver. But when i tried to activate Windows, i got an error 0xC004E003 (which says : The Software Licensing Service reported that license evaluation failed.)

I checked the product key with Windows 7 product key checker to see if it's genuine, and it seems to be a OEM SLP license type (not sure what means).

enter image description here

What can i do to activate my copy of Windows ?

Answer

"What is an SLP product key?

A System Locked Pre-installation key, or SLP key, is a product key that does NOT require activation, and is used by major OEMs (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) with Windows Pre-installation deployments, a special way to install Windows for cloning to PCs en masse.

How can I install an SLP key?

You cannot! SLP keys will NOT install on a standard installation of Windows using standard media (OEM, Retail, Upgrade, Technet/MSDN, etc. etc.) Additionally they may be locked to a particular OEM (ex. Dell.)

The only way you will get a copy of Windows installed using an SLP key is with the original installation media from the OEM, which is usually an imaged based “installation” with all the bloatware on it – maybe except in the case of Dell, which typically will ship Dell branded standard Windows installation media with the SLP key embedded. Point being, you’ll never need to know what an SLP key is, because you’ll never have to enter one during an installation – if you were to be prompted for a key during install, then the SLP key isn’t embedded, and guess what, it won’t work anyway."

hard drive - Windows 7 Startup Repair deleted user/system files, won't boot at all now

My 64bit PC running Windows 7 was hanging on AVGIDSEH.SYS at boot. After googling this issue (which appears common) I renamed the AVG folder in Program Files and removed all avg*.sys files from system32 as per the advice of several forums.

At this point Windows began hanging on CLASSPNP.SYS during boot. Throughout all of this I was able to boot Ubuntu from a flash drive and access the file system.

From the recovery console I let Windows Startup Repair run to see if it would actually get the system to boot before I tried the command prompt to run chkdsk and sfc etc.

Startup Repair seemed to work, it took slightly over an hour (as the prompt suggested it would) but restarted to A disk error has occured, press CTL+ALT+DEL to restart.

The hard-drive made a funny noise, so I ran SMART tests (short and extended). Both passed within a minute.

I accessed the recovery console command prompt and tried to navigate to the C: drive, and received a message saying the drive was corrupt and unmountable.

Booted Ubuntu again and all of the user files, program files, and many other executables and .dlls are missing although the directory structure remains and all I get when I try to boot is A disk error has occured.

Did start-up repair really eat my files or just lose them? Should I just format and reinstall at this point? Could the drive be toast even though it passed SMART and I can still see the remaining files from Ubuntu?

Answer

Run chkdsk /r on the hard drive from command prompt, see if it will run, if it does it will take a long time depending on the size of the C partition, be patient and do not interrupt it. I think you have more serious hard drive issues, as SMART tests do not always reveal impending hard drive failure. best to run the hard drive manufacturers disk diagnostics on the drive

windows - Transfer disk contents *without* cloning tools

Is it possible to "clone" a disk which contains programs by performing a copy of all the disk contents (preserving file attributes) from source to destination disk, and unplugging the source disk and changing the drive letter of the destination disk to match that of the source?

Context

I have a two disk Windows 8 system with a system drive and a data drive. Recently, the data drive developed a number of bad sectors leading to IO errors. I have been sent a replacement drive so I simply need to clone the contents of this data drive onto the replacement. The drive contents include documents & media, user folders (My Documents and related), and some programs (games etc).

Problem

The problem is that the bad sectors on the source disk causes most disk cloning tools to fail with read errors. Attempted approaches include:

  1. Disk clone from live boot environment with Acronis True Image. Fails due to read errors.

  2. Disk clone from live boot environment with Clonezilla. Fails due to read errors.

  3. Disk clone using Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier. Fails due to hardware timeouts in the HDD (application hangs indefinitely).

  4. A straightforward copy from source to destination disk using FreeFileSync (preserving file attributes and metadata). This succeeds.

So at the moment I have a replacement disk which contains all of the data from the original disk. Now all I need to is somehow get Windows to replace all references to the old disk to the new one. Is this possible by simply swapping the assigned drive letters? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer

Thanks all for the responses. I went ahead and tried to do the disk clone from Windows, and surprisingly it worked. I've written up my method in case other people find themselves in similar situations and need an alternative to offline clone tools (for the record, I suspect that Ryan's CloneZilla suggestion would have worked if I had taken the time to configure it correctly, so best to try this as a last resort). Method:

  1. Copy disk contents - Using FreeFileSync, I copied the contents of the source disk "F" to the destination disk "G", preserving file attributes and running as administrator. I made sure to remove all of the file ignore patterns so that nothing was missed.

  2. Disconnect source disk - I shutdown the machine and physically disconnected the SATA cable from the source disk.

  3. Assign new drive letter - After powering up the machine (and getting all of the expected errors about the missing disk), I changed the the destination disk drive letter "G" to that of the source drive letter "F" using Windows' Administrative tools.

  4. Reboot - After a final reboot, everything worked as expected. Programs which were installed on the now disconnected source disk worked fine when ran off of the destination disk.

In all honestly I expected this to be problematic, as I know that general wisdom dictates you can't simply copy programs across drives and expect them to work. It seems that the real issue is that you can't copy programs across drive letters, but if you're replacing a disk and keeping the drive letter consistent, you can get away with a file transfer, without the need to clone or reinstall.

Files have disappeared on my ext3 external hard drive

Yesterday, my external hard drive was working fine. Now, only the boot partition is accessible whilst the main partition with all my files on it is coming up as a raw, empty drive.

I had taken it to a friend's, where I tried to access the files from a Xbox 360 and a PC. For the latter, I installed Ext2Fsd and Ext2 IFS for Windows 7 but didn't do anything that could have resulted in a formatting or loss of files. The hard drive was moved from one house to another but was extremely snug in a backpack and isn't likely to have taken any knocks.

Any clue what has happened and how I can access the files if at all? I only have access to Windows XP. It is a 1TB drive, so I can't even remember half of what's on it, let alone how to replace it!

windows 7 - Disable Procdump

I had an issue with a vendor product, then I had to run procdump to be able to narrow down the possible cause for this issue, now I need to disable it, is there any way to disable it without taking risks because it is on a critical server

Answer

Run Procdump -u to uninstall ProcDump. You see this when you run procdump -h:

-u Treat CPU usage relative to a single core (used with -c).
As the only option, Uninstalls ProcDump as the postmortem debugger.

memory - Windows 7 32-bit, 4GB RAM installed, 2.3GB usable

I recently added a 2GB memory stick to a TravelMate 5740 laptop running Windows 7 32-bit which already had 2GB of RAM.
I am aware of 32-bit systems not making use of the full 4GB memory, but I was expecting actual usage between 3GB and 3.5GB. Instead, Windows reports 4GB installed, 2.3GB usable.
This is not your average "where is my memory" question, and I don't think it is a duplicate. 2.3GB of usable memory out of 4GB installed is unexpectedly low even for 32-bit systems. Graphics card is an Intel shared-memory one that uses 128MB. Can anyone explain this? Can this problem be "addressed", pun intended?

Disable Windows Key Windows 10

The header says most of it. I'm trying to find a way to disable the windows key either through GPO, local policy, or an edit in registry, but Google has been less than helpful.

windows - software-based dual-monitor solution via LAN

Does anyone know of a software-solution which makes it possible to use a monitor attached to another (running) PC via LAN in the same way as a second monitor?

My situation is this: I have a PC and a notebook. Sometimes it would be very convenient if I could use the PC's monitor as a second monitor from the notebook. I know that I can attach the monitor to the notebook, but I was thinking maybe there are is a software-based solution, e.g. a program (similar to remote desktop) which would run on the PC and notebook and which would allow me to use the PC's monitor from the notebook as if it were physically attached.

Update: I'm using windows 7.

Answer

Assuming you're running Windows, MaxiVista can do this:

MaxiVista turns any spare Desktop,
Laptop or Netbook PC into a dual
monitor for your primary computer. No
extra multi monitor hardware is
required. Simply extend program
windows across multiple screens as if
it were one big monitor. Increase your
productivity by using multiple
monitors.

MaxiVista is not free though.

There is also ZoneScreen but I've never used it and don't know how well it works.

Edit: Actually this question is a duplicate of many questions, as you can see by checking all questions whose answers mention MaxiVista :-) .

keyboard shortcuts - Can I get Notepad++-style vertical selection with arrow keys in Sublime or Atom?

In Notepad++, I'm used to using Alt+Shift+/// to put expand the cursor across multiple lines in a vertical line or rectangular selection. I think Visual Studio does something similar.

I'm trying Sublime and Atom instead. Ctrl+D, Ctrl+click, and Alt+click + drag are very cool, but I miss using the arrow keys to make my vertical selections.

Is there a way to do vertical/rectangle selects in Sublime Text 3 or Atom with the arrow keys? I'm open to installing packages.

Example

  1. Say I have this ( represents the cursor, ignore the spaces in that column):

    x = os│.join(a, b)
    y = os .join(b, c)
    z = os .join(c, d)

  2. I realize I forgot the module name, so I hit Alt+Shift++ and have:

    x = os│.join(a, b)
    y = os│.join(a, b)
    z = os│.join(a, b)

  3. I type .path and now I have:

    x = os.path│.join(a, b)
    y = os.path│.join(a, b)
    z = os.path│.join(a, b)

I'd like to do the second step in Sublime Text 3 or Atom.

partitioning - cant allocate free space to partition ubuntu 12.04

I have 26GB of unlocatted space and I want to add that space to my existing partitions. The problem is that i cant seem to use use that space to resize the partitions.

Here is my partitions list in gparted enter image description here

I want to copy the free space to the /dev/sd6 partition but the option resize is greyed out.

Answer

The resize option is likely grayed out since the partition is mounted. Since it appears this is your root partition, your best option is probably to use a GParted LiveCD or LiveUSB. Once you boot from that drive, you should be able to resize/move any partition on the drive.

installation - Install Windows XP on old IDE hard disk

I wanted to know if there was a way to install Windows XP on a old Pentium 4 (Intel motherboard) system which does not boot via USB and CD/DVD drive?

Is it possible to connect the hard disk to my laptop and install Windows XP Pro on it using VMware (replicating the Pentium 4 motherboard conditions)? or is there any other way anyone knows about?

But when I try to boot from USB it gives me a "j and blinking cursor" and the CD/DVD doesn't show in the BIOS.

A friend tried to clone my Windows XP partition in the laptop to the Pentium 4 pc hard disk using paragon option "clone partition" it gives a different error.

"/ntldr" error code 0xc000000e

Please let me know a solution
Many thanks.

macos - My MacBookPro (Sierra) not using Swap memory though no RAM is left

Recently my mac started to work very slow and constantly freezing due to running out of memory. I thought that it's supposed to use ssd space once RAM is close to full, however, it's not using the disk space enough to make some free RAM.

It does use some swap memory like 2.3gb ssd vs 7.8gb ram while over 13gb of ssd is still left.

PC Power Supply Failures

I've just had a second PC power supply fail in the space of a few weeks - I went to switch on the PC and there's no response, no lights, no boot up, no disk spinning. Both were quite old units in separate PCs sharing a single wall socket via an extension block.

I'm wondering what can cause power supplies to fail. Are there failure modes that could cause them to fail so close to one another. Does switching on the wall socket and then off again quickly cause problems? It's probably just coincidence but I'm wondering what are common failure reasons for PC supplies and what can be done to reduce the chance of it happening?

troubleshooting - What happened to my Hard Drive?

I bought a WD MyBook 500GB to back up my two internal drives that I have had for over 4 years each. The backup went smoothly over Firewire at a respectable speed and everything was fine for months and months.

Fast forward to a month ago. I was using the external drive when all of a sudden there was a click and it powered off. I tried turning it back on but it would click on spinup and power off again and again. Obviously this is making me panic as I know that the internal drives that I backed up are going to die any day. I also know that the probability of being able to back up those drives onto another one is lower than ever.

So here I am at the mercy of WD. I know that I absolutely need to be able to access the data on the MyBook. I decided to take it apart and remove the SATA drive within. When I opened it I realized that the hard drive itself was so hot that the metal burned me on contact. Obviously the hard drives should not be so hot that you can boil an egg on them. I thought maybe since my computer has fans blowing at the hard drive bays, I can put the drive inside my computer. For those not familiar with the MyBook external drive, the enclosure has no cooling what so ever.

I was able to put the drive inside my computer and everything was running great, until a couple days ago. I downloaded 20 gigs of data that I needed to transfer to this 500GB drive that I got out of the MyBook. I started the transfer and then saw the approximate copy time was 4 hours. The transfer rate was 1.5MB/s (Megabytes, not Megabits). Obviously this is ridiculously slow over the SATA interface even on the low RPM WD Green drive.

My next move was to try to figure out if maybe there is some issue with Windows 7, or with drivers, or maybe anything else that is creating a bottleneck on the transfer. I did a reboot into Ubuntu with a LiveCD, mounted the necessary drives, and started the transfer. Exact same situation, 1.5MB/s and not a kilobyte faster.

I rebooted back into windows and ran a test on both my main OS drive and the WD drive having this issue. The results are as follows:

OS Drive (Best of 5 Tests, 100MB Test Data Size)

Sequential Read: 49.01 MB/s
Sequential Write: 48.28 MB/s
Random Read 512K Chunks: 19.51 MB/s
Random Write 512K Chunks: 23.97 MB/s
Random Read 4K Chunks: 0.298 MB/s
Random Write 4K Chunks: 1.132 MB/s

Faulty WD Drive (Best of 5 Tests, 100MB Test Data Size)

Sequential Read: 41.82 MB/s
Sequential Write: 1.060 MB/s
Random Read 512K Chunks: 25.83 MB/s
Random Write 512K Chunks: 1.250 MB/s
Random Read 4K Chunks: 0.395 MB/s
Random Write 4K Chunks: 1.575 MB/s

Obviously something is horribly wrong. The read speed is completely fine, probably what it always was. The write speed on the other hand is abysmal. What could possibly cause the write speed to slow down so much and not affect the read speed? It is worthy of noting that once the data is written at this very low speed it is written correctly. There is no file corruption. If I run a S.M.A.R.T. Quick Test (Using Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics software), I get this error message:

Quick Test on drive 1 did not complete!
Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test)
SMART self-test did not complete on drive 1!

But on the actual main screen of the utility it says that the drive SMART Status is PASS.

That was a lot of information but hopefully someone knowledgeable with Hard Drives can help me with a couple questions.

1. What is going on? Did the heat in the external enclosure damage the drive?
2. Why can I still use the drive without any problems other than a slow write speed?
3. What is going on with this SMART Status and what does that Quick Test result mean?
4. Should I expect this drive to die on me any second?

Pretty much any other input anyone has would be great. I really want to diagnose what happened and unfortunately I don't have that much experience with Hard Drive issues.

Answer

What is going on? Did the heat in the external enclosure damage the drive?

It is impossible to say for sure, as we can't for sure say if the heat is a symptom or a cause. I would tend however to support your thesis, though, as heat affects magnetic properties of materials.

Although it is unlikely that your HD reached any close to the curie temperature, heat can still weaken the magnetic proprieties of materials, as cold improves them. It might be (but this is just an hypothesis) that the magnetic proprieties of the disk surface or of the writing heads have weakened.

Also, heat can have deformed the physical shape of some component, making them less effective (for example a writing head which is now further away from the disk surface).

A test you could do is to wrap your HD in a watertight plastic bag and immerse it in a bowl of crumbled ice (even better: you can mix the crumbled ice with salt, that brings the temperature down to circa -21°C) and repeat the tests there. You might notice an increase of performance.

Incidentally his is a technique that - through contraction of the materials - is also useful to unstuck movable parts (which does not seem your problem, as normally a stuck movable part means no read and no write capabilities at all).

Another common cause of disk failure is vibration. Vibration brings lack of precision in the moving parts, tear of joints, wrong alignments between heads and disk surface, and so on and so forth. In case something is now impeding the disk to revolve smoothly, you would for sure have extra heat generated by both the friction and the increased power used by the engine to keep up the rotation at the same speed. In this scenario heat would be a symptom rather than the cause of your problems.

Why can I still use the drive without any problems other than a slow write speed?

With a metaphor: for the same reasons for which you will go faster on a well lubricated bicycle than on a rusty one. Modern hard drives are smart enough to compensate for hardware problems, so - unless a core component is broken - they will find a way to keep running (this is so because HD's obsolete very quickly, and if they would stop working at the first writing error or corrupted sector, you would be changing your HD every few weeks).

What is going on with this SMART Status and what does that Quick Test result mean?

Unless you find some official documentation, this is a question one might only infer the answer to. You can pick your favorite one: from marketing reasons (so you do not immediately notice defects!) to human mistakes (it's just a bug, it should report "not passed") transiting by design ones ("pass" means the HD is still usable, the test that fails signal the fact a non-essential subsistem is broken)

Should I expect this drive to die on me any second?

Again: you can never know for sure. I have still a 5 Gb unit from the 90's up and running, for example. But consider this: you normally would keep backups of a totally healthy HD because it might - all of a sudden - fail. Now, you have an HD with visible signs of bad health status, heating up like crazy, having degraded performance and failing tests... if I were you, I would definitively hope for the best but prepare for the worst!

Hope this helps, and if you try the cryo trick (the ice thing) I would be very interested to know the outcome of it. Best luck!

boot - Why can't I see my USB drive during Windows 7 installation?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bits on a NVMe SSD from a USB drive. I know Windows 7 does not have NVMe support, so I need to install the drivers during the installation. The problem is that during the installation I cannot see my USB drive were I copied the drivers. Here is what I did:

  1. I used the Rufus tool to create a bootable USB in GPT partition UEFI mode FAT32 format.

  2. I added the drivers to the USB and to a second USB.

  3. I inserted the USB in the computer's USB 2.0 port and entered the BIOS.

  4. on the BIOS I enabled CSM support and selected UEFI mode for Storage and PCIe.

  5. Then I booted into the installer and it asked me for a driver which I was expecting.

  6. I clicked on Browse and I could only see the X: drive which has the installation, but I couldn't see my USB drive.

  7. I inserted my second USB, but that didn't work either. I read comments of people inserting it on the USB 3.0 slot and that why it didn't recognize it, but that isn't the case here, I'm using USB 2.0.

Specs:

  • Mobo: ASUS Z170-A

  • CPU: Core i7 6700k

  • RAM: 2 ✕ 8GB DDR4 2666Hz Hyper X Fury

  • SSD: Samsung 950 Pro NVMe M.2.

I might be missing something in the BIOS, but I don't know what.

Answer

Your motherboard does not have any EHCI (USB 2.0) controllers. Intel decided to give those up with the 100-series chipsets. So you have only XHCI (USB 3.0) which Windows 7 knows nothing about.

The only reason why you are able to boot to Windows 7 Installation on USB Key is because your PC's BIOS is emulating a hard-drive/CD-ROM from it! Neat trick, but it doesn't always get you through to the end of a Windows 7 install.

ANYWAY, lets think outside the box... why are you doing any of this via USB Key? Please tell me you have DVD/Bluray drive on this PC.

If so, you could always burn the NVMe drivers to a blank DVD. Then you can install Windows 7 off the Win7 DVD. When you get to the "load driver" bit you can eject the Win7 DVD and insert your NVMe DVD. Once the driver has loaded, you can eject the NVMe DVD and re-insert the Win7 DVD to finish the install.

While you're at it you could also put all other drivers (ethernet, audio, graphics, usb3) on the NVMe DVD so you can get Win7 internet-connected and ready for Windows Updates. Beware that the first scan of Windows Updates on a fresh install might take 3~4 hours (I'm not kidding).

windows - Can Task Manager show the total memory usage for a group of processes?

Some applications like Google Chrome and TweetDeck show up as several processes in Windows Task Manager. This means that the memory reported in each row is only part of the overall amount used by that application. Is there some way to view the total memory usage of an application or a group of related processes?

For example, in the screenshot below the total of all of the chrome.exe instances is 708,308 K, but I had to add that up manually as I can't find a way to get that total within Task Manager.

Screenshot of Task Manager

I have tried some alternatives such as Resource Monitor, Process Explorer and Process Hacker, but none of them seem to able to give the total either. I am using Windows 7 (Professional).

Shortcut to close last opened bracket in Notepad++?

Is there any shortcut to close the last opened bracket for notepad++?

i.e., if I write:

if (this.variable == _variable

and then hit the shortcut keys, it would add a ")" because that's the last opened bracket.

or if i write:

if (this.variable == _variable) { getJson({ some:data },function () { alert("something");

then hit the shortcut keys three times, it would know to add a "}" to close the function, then a ")" to close the getJson, then a "}" to close the IF statement.

(maybe the latter one doesn't make as much sense because one would expect a semicolon after the getJson is closed, but I guess my point is clear)

My question comes up because I am frustrated with the functionality of a closing bracket coming automatically after I open a bracket. In the end, I have to write that bracket myself anyways because I want to continue my code that comes after the bracket that was automatically added.

windows 7 - How do I make my Boot Camp partition bootable again?

I needed to resize my Boot Camp partition so I used Gparted to move and resize it. This seemed to work, except that now I can't boot into Windows.

I can boot into OS X just fine. OS X can recognize the Boot Camp partition and view its contents. When I try to reboot into Windows, however I get the message:

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

The only solutions I've been able to find online suggest that the only way to fix this is to either clone the drive or remove the Windows partition and re-install it.

Is there any way to fix my Windows partition so that I don't have to reinstall Windows again?

Answer

It might be that your Windows partition is just fine, but it's your Protective Master Boot Record that's screwed up. Macs use the more modern GUID Partition Table (GPT) format to define where each of the partitions are, but for Boot Camp booting into Windows, you need a fake version of a traditional Master Boot Record (MBR) on the drive.

Apple's Boot Camp Assistant takes care of creating this "Protective Master Boot Record" or "PMBR" as they call it. Apple's tools are aware of the need for keeping the GPT and PMBR in sync, but perhaps GParted wasn't so careful.

There are third-party tools such as rEFIt that, among other things, can probably help you get your GPT and your PMBR back in agreement after some other tool has messed them up.

Or you might try using Mac OS X v10.7.x (Lion)'s Disk Utility to repair the drive. Make sure you select the whole disk, not a partition.

Another fix might be to use Disk Utility to slightly resize a partition, so that it has to rewrite the GPT and PMBR.

Why doesn't Windows Update give us the most recent updates?

...For example, I'm updating an old Windows XP machine, and Windows update tried to get me to install Internet Explorer 7. But Internet Explorer 8 is out. Why not skip 7 and just go to 8?

There have also been times in the past when doing a fresh XP install, I'll install a ton of updates, and THEN Windows Update suggests I install Service Pack 2. If I had skipped straight to Service Pack 2, I wouldn't have needed to install most of those updates! And I have since learned to do just that - manually download SP2, then SP3, and then start updating. Why doesn't Windows Update know to do this for us?

Unable to boot, motherboard beeps every 5 seconds or so

A couple of weeks ago, my computer suddently crashed (the screen blinked twice, and then the computer shut down).

Upon restarting it, I got no picture and my motherboard made one long and three short beeps.

After trying all sorts of things, I decided to send in my GPU, and I had a replacement sent, but after installing it yesterday, it seemed to work, but it was just hanging at the motherboard splashscreen. I then tried to enter BIOS to see if there was something wrong with the boot settings, but I couldn't enter BIOS. After hitting DEL a few times, the onboard speaker would start making a weird clicking sound every time I hit a key on my keyboard.

After having tried restarting a few times, It went back to doing the same thing as before I installed the new GPU... One long, three short beeps.

EDIT

Motherboard: Gigabyte X79-UD7
CPU: Intel i7-3930k 3.4Ghz
GPU: ASUS Geforce GTX 670
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengance
Powersupply: Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold 1000W
Harddrive: 1x 1TB Western Digital, 1x 120Gb Corsair

EDIT 2

Right, so now I get a picture, but it hangs at debug code 62... I've done a bit of research and this seems to be a problem with the new sandy bridge architecture... Time to RMA my motherboard..... Thanks for all the suggestions, though! :)

Windows 7 run batch file at low priority in wide window

I have a long-running, CPU-intensive job that I want to run with low priority. This is easily done in a Windows 7 batch file with START /LOW.

The only problem is that it starts a separate window which is the default width for a command window, which is very narrow, less than half the width of one monitor, which makes it harder to read the results than I would like. (I have set the properties of the command window shortcut so that it normally starts a wider window, but that isn't getting applied in this context.)

How can I cause the long-running job to run in a wide command window? I have tried START /LOW /B to run the low priority job within the current window, but that leaves the process associated with the job still hanging around even after the job finishes, which messes things up.

Answer

Best ways to do it

As you said " default width for a command window, which is very narrow "

This is because you did not change default width and height of command prompt. you must have to change default width and height of command prompt it self not for the shortcut.

open run and type cmd, hit enter
right click on title bar and chose properties
go to layout menu and change window size to desire (optimal width:200 Height:50)
from font menu change fonts also to desire size
press ok and exit CMD

(You must run CMD again and drag CMD to desire position on screen and close it.which position you will close it, CMD will run always on exact position with same windows and font size you set.

Now when ever you will run batch file or command prompt they will always run in same position, same windows size and font.

Note : this solution can do trick on windows 7 as well as windows 10.

Extra : there is quick and dirty solution for this also, add this line in Batch file
after @echo

 MODE CON COLS=999 LINES=999

but this will only increase size of window, nothing will change with fonts etc.

microsoft excel - Allowing users to unhide (format) only chosen columns

TL;DR, what I want to achieve:

  • Hide some columns which I do not want to show to anyone (check)

  • Hide some columns which I want to show only to some users (check)

  • Set separate passwords for both column groups (one I would not disclose, and the other I would disclose to selected users) (uncheck)

But the problem is that:

  • If I check "Allow all users to format columns" on level of protecting whole sheet, ALL columns may be unhidden by anyone

  • If I set password for range ("allow users for editing ranges"), while "allow all users to format columns" is unchecked, no column can be unhidden without knowing the superior password (which protects also the columns which I do not want to show to anyone)

Full story:

I have an excel file which I would like to share. There are certain hidden columns, which I do not want anyone to unhide. But on the other hand there are 2 columns which I would like to be protected in a way that some users are able to view (unhide) them.

I have dug into protecting sheets, giving users access to ranges, etc, but I can't manage to find a solution to column hiding/unhiding.

I tried hiding all of the columns (the ones that I want perma-hidden and the ones that I want to be unhidden by some users) and setting a password for the sheet editing. Then, I figured that I would set a separate password for editing ranges (and I selected the columns I wanted). But still, its not possible to unhide the separate range (consisting of columns I want to show to some users by giving them password to this particular range).

So I tried implementing something on the level of whole sheet and found out that there is attribute "Allow all users.." -> "Formatting columns". But then, all of the users will be able to unhide ALL of the columns (and I only want them to be able to unhide columns I choose).

BTW, I use Excel 2007.

Windows 10, HP laptop battery "plugged in, not charging"

After installing Windows 10 on my HP Pavilion g6-2197sa laptop, I have had problems charging the battery. The battery icon reports something like "79% available (plugged in, not charging)."

I can, sometimes, temporarily fix this problem by following these steps:

  1. Shut down

  2. Remove battery

  3. Boot up on AC power

  4. Uninstall the ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver

  5. Shut down

  6. Reinsert battery

  7. Reboot

However, I bought a new battery to see whether the issue lay with my original battery, and it worked fine for a while before it also succumbed to the issue. Now the new battery no longer charges even after repeating the above process. My original battery seems to charge temporarily after I repeat the above process.

I have further noticed that my AC light flashes continuously while plugged in, whether the laptop is on or off, which it never used to do.

Also, note that the battery never charges, now matter how low the available remaining power gets - my problem doesn't appear (to me) to be a feature designed to prolong battery life.

I would really like to fix this problem permanently but am completely stumped. Cheers!

boot - BSOD in windows xp even in command line mode

My windows XP SP2 suddenly stopped working. It flashes a BSOD even in

  • secure mode with network

  • secure mode without network

  • last known configuration

How should I try to investigate what's going on?

If I start in safe mode in command line, I can see a black screen with the cursor flashing about 20 times, and then the BSOD appears again.

Note: I have not installed new hardware/software

update: I cannot read the BSOD message. However, I tryied to repair the installation by reinstalling winXP to the same partition, and the windows partitioner stated the partition has unknown type. However, I was able to boot a fedora livecd, and see the partition table (it says it is an ntfs), and see most of my files.

I also did a smart test, and it failed (2 pending sectors on my HDD, is it enough for getting another with a warranty change?)

Answer

It seems highly likely some part of your hardware has failed.

Best case, one of your RAM sticks is gone, but you have more in there. Worst case, your CPU or entire motherboard has blown.

First thing I'd do is see if it works without one of the sticks of RAM inside, just swap each one out in turn and see if it gets better if you have more than 2.

Windows 10 svchost using 24 gigs of memory

On windows 10 one of our users is getting a virtual memory error. Upon investigation, svchost is using 24 gigs of memory. When I do a memory dump and run a memory analysis using windows debugging tools, it shows that none of the treads or loaded modules are using more than a few hundred megabytes. The total of all of the memory all threads are using is about a gigabyte, yet it has 24 gigabytes of committed memory.

What could possibly be using this?
If I stop each service one by one, no individual service frees the gigabytes of memory used, but if I kill the svchost process, it respawns itself and starts back at a reasonable 200 MB. It takes about a week of the PC being on for memory usage to get this high.

memory - Is this the correct way to slot in RAM and is the number okay?

I was using a 2GB DDR3 ram stick on my last Computer, I got a new motherboard which had an offer for 4GB so I took it, got home and discovered it was actually 8 GB DDR3 RAM, two identical 4GB sticks. Pretty cool. :P

Anyway, The motherboard has four slots, two blue and two black. They are arranged like this:

Blue | Black | Blue | Black

I have placed the two 4 GB sticks in the blue slots, and the spare 2GB i had in a black slot. It's probably overkill, but might as well use it I figured.

Is this the correct way to arrange them? Would the 2GB hurt performance, with how channels work?

Thanks.

handbrake - Best way to convert episodic DVDs for Windows Media Center?

I'm archiving my DVD collection. My goal is to be able to play them back in Windows Media Center on Windows 7 Ultimate. For feature-length DVDs, I'm using AnyDVD and CloneDVD, which is working well.

For playing back TV shows (and other episodic content), I'm using Media Browser, which doesn't support a VIDEO_TS folder per episode. It expects the shows to be broken up into one file per episode (e.g. "Willo the Wisp - S01E12.avi").

For this, I'm attempting to use Handbrake, which, for extracting the episodes from DVD (or already-ripped VIDEO_TS folder), is working pretty well.

The problem that I have is that the default x264 encoder over-compresses the resulting video stream, which results in hideous artifacts in animated shows. The aforementioned Willo the Wisp is a particularly bad example, because the original DVD is particularly "noisy".

If I switch to using the ffmpeg encoder, the artifacts are gone in Windows Media Player, but I can't get the resulting files to play back in Windows Media Center. I see the first frame, and then there's an error message: "Windows Media Center cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file cannot be found."

I've installed the CCCP codec collection, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Update: Using Handbrake's "High Profile" preset with either x264 or ffmpeg fails to play in Windows Media Center. In Windows Media Player, they both play, but the x264-encoded file has horrendous artifacts. If I use the "Normal" preset, it plays in Windows Media Center, but with the same artifacts.

So: what's the best way to convert VIDEO_TS to individual episode files for playback in Windows Media Center?

windows 7 - Can laptop slow down after ram upgrade?

I upgraded RAM on my old ThinkPad T400 from 4GB to 8GB.
Is it possible that my laptop slow down because of additional RAM?

It is quite old laptop.
Specs:
Intel Core2Duo P8600 2,4GHz
SSD Samsung Evo 256GB
Originally 2GB RAM, than 2x2GB and now 2x4GB
Win 7 Pro 64-bit

What is happening when I talk about "slow down"? Sometimes it just freezes for some time even when I just browse web. When I look to Windows Task Manager -> Performance Ram is just on maybe 3-4GB used but CPU is at 100% usage. I also think that my laptop is quite hotter then before but it is maybe just false sense or fan is poluted with dust or it is just warm now outside.

Is it possible that now when I finally have enough memory my old CPU isn't able to process so much data?

Thanks for any advance.

hard drive - Can't see disk in Windows explorer

I purchased a new 4TB HDD and put it in an enclosure for external use. I formatted that HDD using the disk management tool (as GPT rather than MBR) and assigned a drive letter to it. I was able to use the HDD just fine. I found out, however, that on the box of the enclosure was listed "supports hard drives up to 3 TB." I was kind of apprehensive about continuing to use this enclosure, so I got a new one which supports 4TB hard drives.

However, with this new enclosure, I now cannot see the drive in Windows Explorer. When I go to disk management, I can see it listed as a Healthy GPT Protective Partition. When I right-click it, though, the only option is "Help."

Here's what I've tried:

When I use the diskpart command line tool, I am able to see the disk with list disk. However, list volumes on the disk returns "There are no volumes." list partition returns

Partition ### Type Size Offset
------------- ------------- -------- ------
Partition 1 Primary 3726 GB 4096 B

I also tried using the program testdisk. I tried the following: For Please select the partition table type, I chose [EFI GPT]; I then chose Analyse, then got Bad GPT partition, invalid signature. Trying alternate GPT. invalid signature., then did Quick Search when it said Try to locate partition. It located an MS Data partition, and I was able to explore it and copy files from it.

So why can't I see it in Windows Explorer, and why can't I assign a drive letter to it? And why is it not associated with a volume in the diskpart utility?

EDIT: Here are the products I have referred to:

Windows 10 Global Shortcut

Guys I have a problem that is grinding my gears for a couple of days. First of all I'm using Windows 10 Insider Preview build 14295.rs1_release.106318-1628. After updated to that version (I don't know if really was there) I'm not be able to press CTRL+N, CTRL+P and CTRL+O on ANY windows application after some minutes computer starts. I mean, I can use those hotkeys a few minutes after windows starts, later that I cannot open new window on Google Chrome nor create a new file on Sublime Text 3 which are the commands for CTRL+N. I use this notebook for work since the last year and those hotkeys uses to work on Windows 8.1 and after upgrading to Windows 10.

I've tried Ethervane ActiveHotkeys, Hotkey Commander and Hotkey Explorer, Shortcut Key Explorer and a couple of other programs and I only discovered that something is binding those keys, but I couldn't find who was. I'm sure that is not a Start Menu Shortcut because it disallow to set hotkeys like CTRL+[A-Z].

I'm considering that all this mess is a work of a module (.dll) which is creating a binding, however System Explorer doesn't shows necessary information to me. I wish you would give me a path to walk through because I've tried all that I could.

Windows Explorer shows different third-party context menus in 32-bit mode on Vista 64

I have several third-party applications that add their actions to the menu that's enabled by right-clicking on files in a Windows Explorer. These are tools such as TortoiseSVN.

It usually works fine, but some applications open Windows Explorer windows where these menus are absent. For example, launching a windows explorer window from Cygwin using explorer . &, or using "Explore Files" action in Eclipse results in such state.

Is this a bug in Vista? Is there anything I can do to make Windows Explorer behave consistently?

Clarification Edit:

Actually, upon careful examination, it appears that actually different menu icons appear depending on the invocation mode. E.g. "Unlocker" application only shows up in the "spawned" version, whereas Tortoise and DiffMerge icons show up in the directly launched one.

This is what a "normal" Windows Explorer window should look like on my machine. This was opened using WinKey-E shortcut, or invoked from DOS command shell:

alt text

This is what it looks like (examining the same file in the same directory) when launched from Cygwin:

alt text

Clarification Edit 2:

I am observing the following differences when launching from Eclipse and Cygwin:

  • TortoiseSVN and TortoiseGIT icon overlays don't show up

  • Edit with Notepad++ doesn't show up

  • TortoiseSVN and TortoiseGIT menus don't show up

  • DiffMerge menus don't show up

  • Eraser menus don't show up

  • 7Zip menus don't show up

  • Unlocker menus do show up

To my recollection, of these applications, only Notepad++ and TortoiseSVN were installed when I observed this issue, as well as KDiff3 (I later uninstalled KDiff3 context menus to try to troubleshoot it).

Also, it might be relevant that I'm on the 64-bit Vista.

Update 3:

Thanks to Greech's suggestion, I installed and ran ShellExView, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. As I was guessing, the two saw different sets items available.

Here are the screen captures for ShellExView 32-bit and ShellExView 64-bit. They are limited to all non-Microsoft entries.

(Open images in new tabs/windows to see full size)

32-bit:

alt text

64-bit:

alt text

So, the problem reduces to this: when Windows Explorer is spawned from a 32-bit application it gets a different set of menus than when launched from a 64-bit one. To confirm this, I started a 32-bit command prompt using %windir%\SysWoW64\cmd.exe, and launched explorer . inside there. As expected, the 32-bit application menus were visible.

Conclusion

Yes, the problem is that I was running 32-bit Eclipse on 64-bit OS, and it would spawn the 32-bit version of Windows Explorer that didn't have my 64-bit TortoiseSVN/TortoiseGIT menus hooked in. The solution is to install the 32-bit Tortoise versions side by side, as mentioned on the TortoiseSVN downloads page:

Note for x64 users: you can install

both the 32 and 64-bit version side by
side. This will enable the TortoiseSVN
features also for 32-bit applications.

Many thanks to Arjan for asking the right questions, and to Greech for suggesting the key tool to diagnose the underlying issue. I'm going to accept harrymc's answer as it actually comes the closest to the underlying answer, and I don't think there's a way to share the bounty, but I want you guys to know that your help was crucial.

Answer

A similar problem was treated in the following thread : HgTortoise in Vista 64-bit not showing the context menu.

There, the accepted answer was a way to run 32-bit windows explorer on Vista 64-bit using the command:

%Systemroot%\SysWOW64\explorer.exe
/separate

A later update to the thread said:

Update: TortoiseHg 0.8 (released

2009-07-01) now includes both 32 and
64 bit shell extensions in the
installer, and also works with Windows
7. The workaround described below is no longer necessary.

So it seems that your problem is that some products simply install only one version of the extension, either 32 and 64 bits. This is normal, since 32-bit shell extensions cannot be loaded into a 64-bit Windows Explorer, and vice-versa.

A solution would then be, for each such product, to find the missing shell extension 32/64-bits version and to install it in its proper environment.

Configure Firefox to remember form changes when accidentally leaving a HTTPS page?

On some webpages, changed form content gets lost when the user (accidentally) leaves and goes back to the page (before submitting the form).

Example scenario: Bob edits a wiki page in Firefox. He changes existing content of the textarea and adds many new paragraphs. While typing, he accidentally presses Alt+. Whoops, now he is on the previous page. He clicks Firefox' "Next page" button to get back to the edit page. But, oh no, all his changes are gone.

As far as I tested, Firefox' default behaviour for forms on HTTP pages is fine: it keeps the changed content. But the same form on a HTTPS page "forgets" all unsaved changes. (assuming the webmaster didn't implement anything special)

Because it works for HTTP but doesn't work for HTTPS, it seems to be the responsibilty of the browser. I assume they deactivated it for security reasons. Is that correct?

Can this behaviour be disabled (in about:config)? Is it possible that Firefox remembers unsaved changes on HTTPS pages in the same way it does on HTTP pages?

I'm not talking about permanently saving the content with the help of a Firefox extension; it's not necessary to save form changes to be able to retrieve them anytime. I want to prevent content loss only for the situation when the user is navigating accidentally away and then going back immediately after (< 30 seconds).

Computer does not see a new hard drive

I have Windows 7 and Windows Vista ultimate both 64 bit. Tried both. So my hard drive went out and I picked up a Hitachi 2 TB drive. I have an old small drive from my laptop with Windows 7 on it which I am working from now. I put this drive in and the 2 TB drive so to work with disk management. I booted up to check the BIOS and both drives are seen in BIOS. I load up Windows 7 and in my C drive I do not see the 2 TB drive.

I have right clicked on My Computer also it won't let me change letters on the Hitachi. So on to Disk Management and loaded it up and it sees all drives my small drive that is working c: the Hitachi drive reads like 2048 GB with no drive letter tells me it is healthy and online and it will not let me assign any drive letter it will not let me format, which I think this is what has to be done before it will let load Windows from a disk.

I have also loaded with the Windows disk. I get to the part where you can format, load drivers and so on but the Hitachi drive is not there?

My machine:

  • SATA drives

  • 16 gig memory

  • AMD Radeon HD770

  • Ga-9701-ud3 board

  • AMD Phenom 2x4 955 processor @ 3200mhz

There was no setup disk with the Hitachi drive and I did pick it up new.

windows 10 - Task Scheduler won't allow re-use of task names from older, auto-deleted tasks that were created with the /Z switch

While trying to get this to work I created several scheduled tasks with the /Z switch which, according to documentation is...

A value that marks the task to be deleted after its final run.

I was able to create scheduled tasks that were automatically deleted after they expired but I couldn't create new tasks with the same name thereafter. Here's a partial log of the commands I used:

ERROR: The system cannot find the file specified.

I'm using Windows 10 (Build 10586.104) and I haven't tested this on older Windows versions so I'm not sure if this issue is specific to my system. I also can not use the GUI interface (taskschd.msc) to create scheduled tasks with previously used names.

On @root's suggestion, I tried running Unregister-ScheduledTask -TaskName testtask1 -Confirm:$false in PowerShell but that got me this error:

Unregister-ScheduledTask : No MSFT_ScheduledTask objects found with property 'TaskName' equal to 'testtask1'. Verify
the value of the property and retry.

I also ran fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\ and rebooted Windows as recommended by aikitsupport.com but that didn't help either.

PS If you can think of a better question title, feel free to edit it.

Answer

Delete non-valid entries from the TaskCache. The TaskCache is normally maintained automatically, in this case some entries were not removed automatically when the task was deleted.

Search in registry and manually delete any keys that contain the non-valid scheduled task name that are found in:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tasks

and

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree

This will allow reuse of the task name.

Other users with this scenario may also have to delete entries found in C:\Windows\System32\Tasks containing the task name, although in this case, you noticed these had already been deleted.

performance - Some apps very slow to load on Windows 7, copy & paste very slow

I searched here and couldn't find a similar issue to mine but apologies if I missed it. I've searched the web and no one else seems to be having the same issue either.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on a pretty high spec. machine (well, apart from the graphics):

Asus M4A79T Deluxe

AMD Phenom II 965 black edition (quad core, 3.4GHz)

8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR 1333MHz RAM

80GB Intex X25 SSD for OS

500GB mechanical drive for data.

ATi Radeon HD 4600 series PCI-e

Be Quiet! 850W PSU

I think those are all the relevant stats, if you need anything else let me know.

I've updated chipset, graphics and various other drivers all to no avail, the problem remains. I have also unplugged and replugged every connection internally and cleaned the RAM edge connectors.

The problems:

Video LAN (VLC) and CDBurnerXP both take ages to load, I'm talking 30 seconds and 1 minute respectively which is really not right.

Copy and paste from Open Office spread sheet into Fire Fox, for example, is really, really slow, I'll have pressed control V 5 or 6 times before it actually happens, if I copy and then wait 5 to 10 seconds or so it'll paste first time so it's definitely some sort of time lag.

Command and Conquer - Generals: Zero Hour. When playing it'll run perfectly for about 10 or 20 seconds then it'll just pause for 3 or 4 then run for another 10 or 20 seconds and pause again and so on. I had the Task Manager open on my 2nd monitor whilst playing once and I noticed it was using about 25% of the CPU, pretty stable but when the pause came another task didn't shoot up to 100% like others on the web have been reporting (similar but not the same as my issue, often svchost.exe for them) but dropped to 2 or 3% usage then back up to 25% when it started playing properly again. Very odd!

But it gets even odder... I had a BSOD and reboot last week, when it rebooted the problem had completely gone, I could play C&C to my heart's content and both the other apps loaded instantly, copy and paste worked instantly too. I did an AVG update earlier this week which required a reboot, rebooted and the problem's back. I don't think it's AVG related though, I think it was just coincidence that's the app that required a reboot. I think any reboot would have brought the issue back. A number of reboots later and it hasn't gone away again.

If any one could make any suggestions as to the likely cause and solution to these issues I'd be most grateful, it's driving me nuts!

Thanks, Mike....

hard drive - my windows 10 pc got really slow although CPU and memory usage is fine. what else can I do?

since two weeks my windows 10 pc got really slow, and I have no idea why. I can still do everything, but everything takes much longer to a degree that I'm struggling to get my school work done. listening to music is usually not fluent but "stammering", mouse movement is sometimes also interrupted and opening webpages can take ages.

I already tried the following, but none of them solved the problem:

  • free up space on hard disk (C:). now there's 16 GB free, but problem remains (lenovo recovery disk (Q:) is almost full, only 500 MB out of 13 GB are free, but someone told me that this doesn't matter?)

  • check task manager for CPU, memory, network and disk usage, but it's constantly around 50% max (well within the limits) and the computer is still slow

enter image description here

  • try different programs and internet connections, but my pc remains slow, even with the super fast internet at my university

Answer

thanks for your answers, guys, but the solution was actually something else. Turned out that the task "system and compressed memory" is not actually run by windows, but run by some malware which disguises itself as windows. I reset my PC completely, and now it's running fine again.
